Grand West Pre-Prep: An Overview

Nestled just steps away from the famed Portobello Road, in a beautifully renovated Georgian house, Grand West Pre-Prep stands as a beacon of innovative early childhood education in Notting Hill. Our recent visit to this Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ nursery revealed a world where imagination, exploration, and creativity are at the heart of every child’s learning journey. Children are clearly well-cared for, rosy-cheeked and bright-eyed in their Grand West uniform pinafores.

Established in 2020, Grand West Pre-Prep is part of the esteemed Rocket Productions group, founded by Stuart Bamford. This group also includes Chelsea Pre-Prep, Archmore Gardens Pre-Prep, and Kingsland Pre-Prep—institutions recognised globally for their pioneering approaches to early years education. Grand West’s head, Miss Nicole, is upbeat, well-informed and dedicated to her charges. She is supported by a fantastic team of dedicated teachers with diverse skillsets.

Thematic learning environments

Walking through Grand West Pre-Prep feels like embarking on a grand adventure. Light, bright indoor spaces are complimented by colourful and inspiring décor. The school’s design draws inspiration from the Age of Exploration, with each of the rooms transformed into a ‘theatre of learning.’ From an explorer’s office adorned with globes and relics to a towering garden lighthouse housing an art atelier, every space is meticulously crafted to ignite curiosity and wonder. Inside, a child-led approach. When we visited, each class were working on themes that the children were really interested in.  One of the classrooms had a little pond, which allowed the pupils to explore water play.

Curriculum

Grand West’s curriculum is rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, enriched by the school’s own ‘Rocket Approach.’ This child-centred pedagogy emphasises hands-on, project-based learning, allowing children to delve deep into topics that captivate their interests.  On our visit, one of the themes that they were developing for a child was around the penguins that the little one had seen on her travels! Their approach is deeply personal to each child, and this ignites the children’s excitement and eagerness to learn.

Specialist subjects like sports, dance, music, and Spanish are integrated weekly. The nursery was one of the first in London to employ specialist sports, dance and performance teachers. They are eager to help children to develop their own diverse array of talents.

Facilities and daily routine

Operating on a term-time schedule, Grand West offers morning (8:30 am – 12:00 pm), afternoon (12:30 pm – 4:00 pm), and full-day (8:30 am – 3:15 pm) sessions for children aged 2 to 4+. They also provide daily after-school clubs until 4pm. Grand West Pre-prep boasts a 300m² private garden, a performance studio, and seven uniquely themed classrooms, providing ample space for both structured learning and free play. The school building is beautifully decorated and masterfully renovated to create a unique learning space.

With an unusual amount of outdoor space for central London, their garden features a fabulous playground with a climbing frame, a wooden boat on a sand bed and lots of green space. The children here get plenty of fresh air, with outdoor activities being central to the school’s timetable. The nursery even has a dedicated forest school lead.

Community engagement and values

Beyond academics, Grand West places a strong emphasis on community involvement and instilling core values. Collaborations with organisations like Little Village and the Felix Project introduce children to the importance of social responsibility. The school’s ethos—’Be Imaginative, Be Brave, Be Creative, Be Kind’— is woven into daily activities, nurturing compassionate and confident young learners.
