Clearing isn’t only for students who miss their grades. It has become a well-established route for many applicants who decide to change direction, apply later in the admissions cycle or simply find a course that’s a better fit.
What is UCAS Clearing?
UCAS Clearing offers student, who do not hold a university place, the opportunity to approach universities that still have vacancies on their courses. Clearing opened on 2 July 2026 and remains available until 19 October 2026. The busiest period begins after A-level Results Day on 13 August 2026.
Universities use Clearing to fill remaining places on courses that still have availability. This means students can apply directly to universities with vacancies and, in many cases, receive decisions very quickly.
Who can apply through UCAS Clearing?
You may be eligible for Clearing if:
- You didn’t receive the grades needed for your firm or insurance choices.
- You applied after the main UCAS application deadline.
- You declined your university offers.
- You didn’t receive any offers during the application cycle.
- You’ve changed your mind about where or what you’d like to study.
- You’re applying to university after 30 June 2026.
If you already have a confirmed university place, you won’t normally use Clearing unless you choose to release yourself into the process.

Browse the UCAS search tool alongside individual university websites to identify courses that interest you. Keep an open mind. You may discover courses or universities that weren’t originally on your shortlist.

Once you’ve identified courses with vacancies, contact the university directly. Most institutions provide dedicated Clearing phone lines and online enquiry forms during Results Day.
Admissions staff may ask about:
- Your A-level (or equivalent) grades.
- Why you’re interested in the course.
- Your future career ambitions.
- Any relevant work experience or achievements.
Have your UCAS Personal ID, exam results and notes ready before making any calls.
Receive a verbal offer

These are all solid choices, with York and Queen Mary both being part of the Russell Group. Availability can change quickly on Results Day. New vacancies are often added throughout the day as universities review applications.
