The American School of London (ASL)

The American School in London (ASL) is the only international school in Central London which follows the US curriculum. As such, it is heavily over-subscribed and has a rigorous application process.  It is highly advisable to apply early.  The American School in London is located in St John’s Wood, an affluent district of leafy residential streets, which is also known for Lord’s Cricket Ground, the headquarters of English cricket.  From St John’s Wood, you can commute to the City (financial district) and Piccadilly within 25 minutes and Mayfair within 15 minutes.  ASL is brilliantly run by an experienced senior management and admissions team.  It caters for children with different academic needs – and the High School has strong cohort every year gaining entry to Ivy League colleges. ASL take children from 4 years all the way to 18.   The 50 different nationalities represented at the school give it a truly global outlook, whilst at the same time focusing on providing an American education.  Students and parents always comment on the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Application process to the American School in London (ASL)

The American School in London has two application rounds per year.  The first round ends in January and the second in mid-March, in any given application year.  If possible, it is advisable to apply in the first tranche of applications, as most places are filled at this point.  However, it is still possible to gain a spot in the second round of applications in March.  If you miss the March deadline, there will be running wait list, and it may still be possible to obtain places.  The application includes, amongst other documents, a parent statement and a teacher recommendations from your child’s previous school.  For children applying to middle and high school (Grades 5-12) a recent standardised test is required.

Children with SEN needs at the American School in London (ASL)

The American School in London will support children with mild SEN needs, if they are able to.  The school has a dedicated SEN department.  As part of the application process, the school asks families to submit school reports and teacher references from their child’s current school. A recent education psychologist’s report may be required.  The parent statement allows families to elaborate more on their child’s needs.  All of these documents enable the SEN department to determine whether they are able to fully support the child.

Settling into a new school

Like many international schools in London, the American School in London understands the challenges of an international move and takes time to help new families settle into their new school routine.  It is also well-versed in helping children transition to the US curriculum.  For families coming from either American or international schools abroad, ASL feels friendly and familiar.  The school has been rated “outstanding” across all areas by the UK Office of Standards in Education (OFSTED) 50237688
